Anti Hero's
Ronnie Biggs, The Kray Twins, Michael Douglas as that bloke in Falling down, Chopper, Charles Bronson and anyone of the bellend Manchester gangsters from over the years. The politicians and wise men on Newsnight and of course THE SUN scratch their chins and wonder why the support for Raoul Moat has been big and continues to grow. It's simple great swathes of the British public are sofa sitting, stella swigging, Berkley smoking, skunk puffing, benefit scamming, BNP voting, scumbags, and they love a villain as long as he don't fiddle with kids and loves his mum.

Gabriel Orozco.
A couple of films about Mexican Artist Gabriel Orozco. I am fascinated with his relationship with photography. He sometimes describes his photography as sculpture. In the second film you can hear him describe that relationship. Below he describes it as a shoebox. I sometimes personally describe it as "a bit of a bastard" Which is probably why I seldom get asked to descibe it at all...
"For me photography is like a shoebox. It is a container I use to transport what I pick up in my interactions....I value the plane of the photograph in its description of the three-dimensional and in its possible space for storing time. I turn to the photograph as a sculptural space, and at the same time I am drawn to any object that may make an appearance in a photograph." Gabriel Orozco.
Flashlab
Flashlab creates fotografic still lifes, whereas the term Volagrafien better fits the matter. In a labour-intensive work process which employs as many as five people simultaneously for the creation of a photograph, objects and materials of various kinds are thrown and photographed using very short exposure times to freeze movements. We are indebted to Bron, who provided a Scoro Generator which achieves flashing times of up to 1/12 000 sec.

The Same But Different.
This is 'SPRINKLE BRIGADE' who make what I guess you would call 'Street Art' out of dog shit. And it is dog shit. But so much shit is talked that perhaps this dog shit is less bullshit than other shit that is talked. I mean if you want some shit then listen to some of the crap that is spoken HERE.... It's not that the work is bad, It's not, loads of it is really good. But then as the old song goes "And then you go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like....."

'OPEN CITY' Preview night.
Andy Brydon from CURATED PLACE at tonight's preview of the 'OPEN CITY' show which opens tomorrow for real and goes on until 29th July @ THE TRIANGLE. It was a great turnout for what I think is a great initiative, and after talking to Vaughan Allen at the 'do' this is just the first event in an ongoing campaign to make Manchester a safe and hassle free destination for photographers. And of course the event happened on the same day that the HOMEOFFICE has come out and announced THIS. Big step that this is we 'ain't out of the woods yet' so we need to continue to assert our rights to take bloody piccy's as and when we want. Vaughan & CITYCO want to know of any incidents where photographers have been stopped for or stopped from, taking photographs in the city centre. If it's happened to you then they can be contacted HERE. Curated Place.
New(ish) Arts & Culture blog from Manchester based curator and creative producer Andy Brydon. I worked with Andy at URBIS (I think he's still there sitting with the corpse) and a top bloke he is too, not an arty farty heir & grace in sight. It's great to see that the Manchester creative network is spreading online at least as fast as a BP fuck up. HERE.

Proper Tingly Feeling Exhibition......
Went to see INTUITION today at THE WHITWORTH GALLERY. INTUITION is a selection of work from The Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection which was founded in 1981 and has recently been donated to the gallery. Loads of stuff to see and a smashing little booklet to help you on your way with little biographies of some of the 'crackpot's' (and I love crackpot's) that made the work. The first two pictures above are of the work of Dusan Kusmic who lived in a bin and made Art out of bread & cabbage, (one bit true, one bit not, guess). Reading the stories of the people who created this work I felt humbled and a right old moaning bastard. They weren't dissuaded by lack of money, recognition or opportunity. They made the work because they wanted to and because they had a need to. A lesson to us all. The sheer joy of the process can be seen by watching the videos that are made available. I'm reminded of that Picasso (mis)quote "It's taken me a lifetime to learn to draw like a five year old" Go and see and be inspired by Art without the bullshit........

This blog is about to become a little bit more 'fleshy' a little bit less virtual. Hell, a little bit more grown up and academic. It's teaming up later this month and over the coming months with Ed Watts at THE WHITWORTH GALLERY to help put together a series of TALKS. The first one, on the 17th of this month will be me talking. I shall be contacting some of you over the coming months to ask if some of you will give presentations on your work. There will be a fee (modest but fair) paid to whoever.

Klea McKenna.
Image copyright Klea McKennaThere is definitely something in the air at the moment. There seems to be a lot of us documentary photographers looking back at the naturalist craze of the Victorians. In my case it's been flowers in the case of Klea McKenna it's butterfly's and her series The Butterfly Hunter.
Her series is complete and I love it. It's not all either. There's loads of interesting stuff on her site. It's no wonder that she picked up the Hey, Hot Shot! Curator's Choice Award.
