I've noticed in the last couple of years a lot of photographers 'tipping their hats' to pictorialism. Is it the recession? Is it a bit like the growth in knitting, allotments and wearing tweed while cycling? Are we harking back to a more Innocent time? Are we after a big photographic kiss off our Nana's?

The images over on the latest edition of FRACTION may have been shot with plastic camera's and pinholes, which is nothing new but unlike earlier HOLGA photography that shot colour and looked for happy accidents however samey it ended up looking, this new wave seem to be reaching back as far as Fox Talbots 'Window'. Although I enjoy looking at this type of thing in much the same way as I enjoy looking at a nice water colour, I'm a bit surprised at FRACTION for dedicating almost ( I really enjoyed 'Trailers Collected' by Nan Brown) a whole issue to it. The chaps at FRACTION normally give you with something a bit meatier to get your teeth into.

I just found a new online photography mag! And because I'm immature I giggled about the title.... HERE.

FRACTION MAGAZINE have their latest edition out HERE. I got to take my hat off to this lot. I know from mine and Stan's brief foray into the webmag world how much hard work it takes, and these folks keep on turning out edition after edition featuring quality pictures. In this offer Noah Beil's (image above) new 'Back to Basics' work caught my eye

Edition 13 of FRACTION MAGAZINE is now online. Loads of great photography including Dalton Rooney's (no relation to our wayne) 'Long Island Interior' I really like his landscapes including his earlier black and white Sicily series. I have just finished reading THE ROAD I've not seen the film yet, but the above picture is so similar to the way I thought about the landscape in that brilliant book I know these pictures were produced before the film. It's easy to imagine an atmosphere so much harder to produce it in a photograph, I would love to see these images as prints I bet they are stunning.

Latest online edition of VISURA is now out, one of my favourite webmags. This edition featuring Simon Norfolk's spooky 'Blenheim Oaks' a little bit of 'Sleepy Hollow' going on here. And where's that mist coming from? I reckon he's got a diesel FORD Transit running just out of shot.....

Manchesterphotography's oldest friend and leading UK Documentary photographer John Darwell is the main turn in the latest edition of SUPERMASSIVEBLACKHOLE, featuring his series 'Not Starting From Here'.

To be honest SUPERMASSIVEBLACKHOLE has not been on my radar before but there's shed loads of good stuff in it so I've added them to the listings........

OUT NOW!

I got an email the other day from a Michael Duggleby to let me know about a new photography site he has launched called SHUTTERSPARK. It's a resource to showcase the work of recent (2005) graduates. So give him some support. If you fall into the category send in some work and if like me you don't, then get behind it by visiting and commenting.

Britain is still lagging way behind the US and most of Europe when it comes to these kind of web initiatives, so nice one Michael.

Missed You.........

I feel I've neglected you lot, you Manchester photography regulars a bit. I've had my head turned by a new flame the bit of a tart that is EXPIRATION NOTICE It's been a bigger success than I think either myself or Stan could have imagined.

I've had to behave all grown up as well. Dealing with such a high standard of submissions, jeez we've had some good one's it's been humbling.

But I have had to bite my tongue a bit, and you know me, decorum has never been my strong point.

It was the comments we've received already or at least some of them. Like for instance this one is it all men? Do you know what I mean? You go to all this effort to put this together and you still get moaning fucks. Come on, do we really honestly think that women photographers still have to rely on positive discrimination to get by? Here you go just one.

I would have liked to rant at this person who did by the way submit, and just didn't make it, not because she was a women what did she want us to do let her through because of her gender? That's fucking sexist. Here ya go love, your pictures are OK but we'll let you through coz we need a female photographer so every one's happy.

I tell you what love, we will no doubt have several female photographers, we'll get submissions and the work will be tip top it'll get posted and then we may notice the name/gender/race/disability/sexual orientation/age.

Age, oh yeah that was the point.

EXPIRATION NOTICE is now live! And it's a good feeling. Me and Stan have been planning this since before Christmas. I don't think, when we started that we realised how much hard work it would be! Anyway this is Volume1. We had such a brilliant response from photographers that we hope to make this an ongoing monthly exercises.

New Web Things.

Wassenaar is a new webmag brought to you by the people behind We Can't Paint http://wecantpaint.com/wassenaar/index.html. That's another welcome addition to the photie web world. Also you probably know already but if not I'll tell you that good old Joerg Colberg has set up a Google Group over on his world famous photography blog Conscientious http://www.jmcolberg.com/weblog/ & here for said group http://groups.google.com/group/conscientious I'm sitting on the sidelines at the moment, but some pretty smart discussions going down, I think it may well turn into a virtual smokey bar which would be great.

Fraction Magazine

Found out today that my just finished "25 Potential Weapons Descending In Order of Desperation" http://www.manchesterphotography.com/gallery_174768.html series is to be featured as part of a group show on typologies, in the next issue of Fraction Magazine www.fractionmag.com out November 8th.

It's the first time that my work has been featured overseas (as far as I know) and I'm well pleased............
