Preface

Image copyright Mark Page

Have just added a new section to my own website: http://www.manchesterphotography.com/ I've called it Preface because that's what it is. A couple, (five, actually) birds-eye shots of the city centre. The idea that the other galleries are visual tales of life below. I've got new projects I'm working on for the site, and some of the older work on the site will, I think go, Nightwalks etc.

John Angerson

Really like John Angerson's portraits that he was commissioned to make to celebrate the 75th anniversary of ST George's Crypt, a homeless charity based in Leeds. To see more of John's work and to order the book of the project go to: http://www.johnangersonarchive.com/Production/PhotoGroupView.aspx?pbid=4&msa=1&pgid=691227

Oh Joy

Part of the joy for anyone submitting work is Emails like the one I just got: "Many thanks for sending in your work and sorry for taking so long to reply. I have had a look at your project and while I do like the images I don't really think that this is something that we will be able to use at this time. Thanks again for sending it in and best of luck. best,"Lauren: Foto8 Magazine.

Last night's telly, "I'm a bit of a twat" & the future of photography!

Image copyright Kevin Bewersdorf

Ambitious post or what! I know I keep banging on about the TV programme "The Genius Of Photography" But I was excited, it is after all the only TV series on photography other than that shit"Digital picture of Britain" that I can remember. It raised loads of questions for us photographers today. It kept saying about the massive and important shifts in society that were happening at the same time as photography came along, The industrial revolution etc. Is that not the case now? It mentioned the speed at which photographic technologies changed such as with KODAK, is that not even more so now with Digital? My friend thinks I'm "A bit of a nerdy twat" for having a blog, I believe that the Internet, photography, and blogging were meant for each other. And to prove that to you, and to show you what I honestly believe is a very exciting and original photographer, I give you Kevin Bewersdorf: http://geartekcorporation.com/photos/index.html His photography for me is some of the most exciting I have seen recently, FULL STOP

Ian Beesley

Still on the theme of photographer/teachers I bring it back to our "neck of the woods" today with Ian Beesley. Although born a Bradford boy Ian has been photographing and teaching around Manchester for years, in fact, he taught me for a while at Stockport. Ian is now a Senior Lecturer on the MA photography course at Bolton. You can see Ian's work at http://www.ianbeesley.com/

Paul Seawright

A young friend of mine is hoping to apply to Newport to study Documentary Photography. She is applying early next year and I am helping to get her "match fit". Why is it so hard to get a place there? Because it's probably the best course in the country and it's partly down to Paul Seawright. http://www.paulseawright.com/

I have found something that makes me feel warm. I remember with fondness the warm feeling you would get in a Dark room. It was womb like. Michel Campeau is documenting it's passing. http://www.alixetgagne.com/client/campeau/pages/Darkroom/index.htm

Job Done!

For me commercial work is a necessary EVIL. I hate not having complete control over the images I make, which is why I normally only work on projects where I can do what I like. Still we have to keep the wolf from the door and I suppose the discipline and time restraints do us good blah blah blah, but thank fuck it's done!. Above is a sneak preview of a piece I have just finished for level 4 at Urbis. Should be on show by November, so go and take a look. Image copyright Mark Page/Urbis.

The Genius of Photography

Am really looking forward to "The Genius of Photography" starting on October 25th at 9pm on BBC4. For my money there's never enough TV coverage of the visual Arts and what with this country's obsession with sport and the forthcoming drug taking binge that is the Olympics that's probably only going to get worse....... Here for details: http://www.bbc.co.uk/photography/genius/

Tech issues

Have had a few technical problems over last couple of days. Should all be back to normal on the morrow! Will leave you with a quote till then,

"It fascinates me that there is a variety of feeling about what I do. I’m not a premeditative photographer. I see a picture and I make it. If I had a chance, I’d be out shooting all the time. You don’t have to go looking for pictures. The material is generous. You go out and the pictures are staring at you". -Lee Friedlander.

Andy Marland

Being partial to a bit of Industrial Heritage I was very pleased to view the work of Andy Marland http://www.theviewfromthenorth.org/photo381704.html Hailing from Preston way, Andy is trained as an engineer and I think this can be seen in his work.

Stephen Gill

Absolutely love the work of Stephen Gill! Humour is a hard ingredient to add to a photograph, but Gill manages to include a rich seam of quirky Britishness in his work. Kinder than Parr, his work makes you smile to yourself. http://www.stephengill.co.uk/air/index.htm

Harold Riley

Spent a great afternoon at The Lowry. Went to see the Harold Riley photography retrospective. To be honest I didn't think I was going to like it. I have never really been a fan of his painting and I get a bit sick of all that "did I ever tell you I knew Lowry" crap, but I was really impressed. His photographs up to the 1970s are a great piece of social documentary and incredibly forward thinking as it gives us a great insight into a disappeared Salford from the point of view of someone who not only knew it but also loved it. Having said that his more recent photographs are not really worth displaying and I think that a stricter edit would have improved the show. All in all though, well worth a visit. http://www.thelowry.com/WhatsOn/EventDetail.aspx?EventId=2993 PS there's also some prints by some photographic legends but you will have to go to find out who!

14th Noorderlicht International PhotofestivalACT OF FAITHOn show till 28 October, Der Aa-kerk, Groningen, the Netherlands
Act of Faith: for one, heaven; for another hell. But one thing is certain: the Noorderlicht event on religion is being talked about, both regarding its design and its content. More than ever before, this year Noorderlicht has emphatically chosen for experimentation. Act of Faith puts the image center stage. Call it poetic, call it irritating, call it impressionistic, call it visual swill, call it a truly Babylonian confusion of voices: it is certainly a tour through photography. WITH: In our own Noorderlicht Photogallery Children of Abraham, the globe-spanning report on the role of religion in society, by the Magnum photographer Abbas. In the Center for Visual Arts: Material World, about religion without God.Read more...http://noorderlicht.com/eng/fest07/index.htmlNoorderlicht organizes various activities through October:>>http://noorderlicht.com/eng/fest07/activities.htmlBook launch and public interview Lana SlezicSaturday 6 October, 4 PM, Der Aa-kerkEmile Fallaux, editor in chief of Vrij Nederland, speaks with Lana Slezic and Farzana Wahidy in a public interview. (English)For two years (2004-2006) Lana Slezic documented the lives of women in Afghanistan after the expulsion of the Taliban. From her travels through the country and conversations that she had with women as she moved around, it became clear that Afghanistan was still a ruthless tribal state in which, certainly outside Kabul, women and girls were the foremost victims. Slezic's series Forsaken tells the story that they themselves cannot tell. Lana Slezic's translator and good friend in Afghanistan, Farzana Wahidy who has left Afghanistan recently, will be present at the interview as well. Photojournalist Lana Slezic (b. 1973, Canada) has published in newspapers and periodicals such as The Sunday Times, Paris Match and The New York Times. Well not actually, just love that Verve lyric. But yes this is one of the views from the top floor of The Beetham, or as I've been told it's really called The Hilton Tower. What ever it's called it's f***ing high and f***ing cool!

Up The Beetham!

Image copyright Mark Page

Tomorrow I get to go up to the top floor of the Beetham Tower. I am taking photographs of the city which are then going to be used in a collage, which will be on display at Urbis later in the year. It will be the highest I have been other than in an aircraft so I had better take a tripod as I'm sure I'll be shaking a bit!
