Stephen (C) Nuttall is a home grown satirist. This Manchester based illustrator has been taking folk to task using a pencil for donkey's years. He also makes pictures like the one below which is called Conway Line Painter. See more of his work HERE.
It's thought that more people have had a good curry in Rusholme than give a fuck about art...

Oliver East
Without doubt the album of the year so far for me, has got to be Elbow's "The Seldom Seen Kid". http://www.elbow.co.uk/ And through buying that CD, (yes I still buy CD's and then copy them to m.....) anyway, I discovered the work of Oliver East.
Now I think I've been a bit slow on the uptake as his work is well known around Manchester, but well if I can spread his fame a little bit further well bloody good job. Here's his website where you can see and buy the brilliant "Trains Are Mint" ( go to section 4 to see loads of his page layouts) www.rollingstockpress.co.uk and here for a great little interview

Nick Rhodes
Have just been introduced to the work of Nick Rhodes, http://www.switchopen.com/ who is an illustrator and poster designer from Manchester. Nick's work has been on display at Urbis as part of a two day exhibition entitled "Firehouse- UK poster Explosion Tour 2008" which also featured work by the legendary American poster designers and silkscreen stars Ron Donovan & Chuck Sperry. http://www.firehouseposters.com/ All three of them had produced stunning handmade posters, for bands, nights etc.
The bad news is that you've missed it, as today was the last day at Urbis. The good news though is that you can see and buy Nick's work here in Manchester at The Richard Goodall Gallery here: http://www.richardgoodallgallery.com/rggstore/nick-rhodes-m-589.html?osCsid=f2ad2bc9ccd68d83ce159daed6d59c1f and Ron Donovan & Chuck Sperry are showing their work around the UK, dates below.
- June 17 & 18, Archipelago Art Gallery, Sheffield.
- June 19 & 20, Studio Y Gallery, Birmingham.
- June 21 & 22, The Basement, Brighton.
- June 23 Nottinghill Arts Club, London.

Fag Baboon
Image copyright Stephen NuttallNeither fag nor baboon, fag baboon is an illustrator. Claiming to hail from somewhere in Lancashire he has spurned his wooly back ways and utilises various forms of transport to arrive in the big city of Manchester. http://www.manchesterillustration.com/ be afraid, be very afraid.

Andrew Brooks
Image copyright Andrew Brooks"Photography has more in common with poetry than with painting". So said the influential American art critic Clement Greenberg. With the work of Andrew Brooks I'm not so sure. I wrestled with whether to include his work on this blog, as it doesn't fall into one of the photographic genres I wanted to look at in these pages, IE Documentary/photojournalism. And besides it opens up that whole digitally manipulated photography "can of worms". Is what Andrew does, photography? I for one am not sure, so lets not debate it here, you can do that in the comfort of the pub over the weekend! What no-one can debate though, is the sheer mastery of what Andrew achieves. Perhaps it's not photography, perhaps it's illustration, who cares, whatever it is, nobody does it better than Andrew Brooks. http://www.andrewbrooksphotography.com/
