FOAM MAGAZINE TALENT CALL 2013 (Strictly NO old bastards)

I was in two minds whether to post this as it's got one of the daft No under 35 year old rules that the photography world loves so much. What if you're a slow fucker like me eh? I do like FOAM though and they do showcase some good stuff so heyho. And I guess we can let the kids have something as their music is all so shit. So if you are under 35....

The call out:
The international photography magazine Foam Magazine officially opens the submission for its seventh annual Talent Call on Monday, February 4. All photographers worldwide between 18 and 35 years old (booo hiss!) are invited to submit their portfolios for the Talent Issue.

‘The annual Foam Talent Call searches for exceptional talented photographers from all over the world. We aim to have an annual overview of the work of young promising artists. We are curious for new developments, trends and themes that are of importance to contemporary artists,’ according to Marloes Krijnen and Pjotr de Jong, respectively editor-in-chief and creative director of Foam Magazine.
Every year, Foam Magazine dedicates its Fall issue to publishing the work of young talents. It is a springboard into the international photography industry for these artists, giving them worldwide recognition and acclaim. Last year the winning portfolios were chosen from almost a thousand submissions from all over the globe. The winning portfolios, chosen by the Foam Magazine editorial team, will be published in the Fall issue, Foam Magazine #36 / Talent. The Foam Talent Call 2013 is open to all photographers aged between 18 and 35 across the globe. The entrance fee is €35,- and the competition is fierce, but those chosen will be showcased in the Fall Talent Issue of the magazine and exhibited/promoted in different ways through the international photography network of Foam Magazine. The editorial board will choose the portfolios according to the creative vision and concept of the series presented, amongst other criteria.
Previous Foam Talents are Melinda Gibson, Ina Jang, Alex Prager, Raphael Dallaporta, Jessica Eaton, Shane Lavalette, Sam Falls, Noémie Goudal amongst others.

The campaign for the Talent Call is developed by branding agency Vandejong. The song 'Come Back' from upcoming Dutch indie rock band The Vagary is used for the campaign video. Please visit our campaign website: www.foamtalent.com

Invitation from the Shpilman Institute For Photography

I know MANCHESTER PHOTOGRAPHY readers are a clever bunch. I know that even now as I speak, some of you have recently finished your Master's and may be looking for your next challenge? Is there some burning issue to do with photography that you feel needs the time (and money) for some serious academic study? Read the below email go and have a look and I'll stick a link at the side for you if you decide to have a pop........ Good luck my fine MANC brains..............

Dear Mark ,

My name is Anat and I'm a researcher at The SIP - The Shpilman Institute for Photography.

The SIP is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote an open discussion about the meanings and functions of photography and related media. The SIP aspires to facilitate, promote and initiate research, open debate and creative work in the fields of photography.

I invite you to browse through our blog institute's blog, (which is really interesting: Mark) which we consider as a conceptual hub, dealing with visibility through community based cultural exchange. We welcome visual and conceptual collaborations as part of our ongoing activity.

We have been disseminating our first annual calls for research during the first weeks of December. As we are well familiar with the contents of your blog, we thought these calls for research may be of interest both for you and for your readers.

We will be more than happy to send you our calls, so that you will be able to distribute them to "Manchester Photography" members and readers.

All the best,

Anat Movshovitz

Saturday 16th October - Thursday 21st October 2010

Rochdale Canal, Calder Valley, West Yorkshire, UK

As part of Over Yonder in collaboration with East Street Arts' Social Club 2010, Contents May Vary have produced Boatelier which uses the alternative, ready-made exhibition and performance space of a narrow boat navigating the Rochdale Canal for the location of an exhibition of three event-based works. Each artist has produced a participatory event for Boatelier which takes the idea of connecting the twinned locations of the Aire and Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, England and the Ruhr Valley in Germany and explores the social, historical and political similarities and differences.

From the 16th to the 18th of October, Contents May Vary will navigate the boat from Sowerby Bridge through to Todmorden, Each day they will moor at an advertised location where they will present their event based works. Throughout each event they will collect artefacts which will be added to a collection on board the boat, accumulating throughout the journey.

From the 19th to the 21st of October, Contents May Vary will make the return journey from Todmorden to Sowerby Bridge inviting members of the public aboard the boat to experience the collection and the results of the events. Refreshments will be provided and visitors can discuss everything from art to boating with the artists.

Sunday 17th October, 15.00-17:00: Hebden Bridge
Monday 18th October, 18.00-20:00: Todmorden

The Terry O'Neill Awards

Well worth a punt this one. It's £7 to play but hey you could win £3000, £1000 or £500. You also get a show at THE HOTSHOE gallery and a feature in THE SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE. So £7 for £3000 not as good as a 'scratch' card and no doubt worse odds but probably better for your career.... HERE to enter.

The Original.

Click on the flyer above to find out more about another opportunity to get involved in a photofestival, this time the original quintessential British photography festival, Hereford. £15 again submission. £5 dearer than FORMAT with a closing date sooner (1st May) I can't afford or justify both so I have to way up. Bet I'm not the only one that has to make these kind of decisions? I can't remember so many calls and open submissions from festivals as I have this year. Obviously a good revenue stream. I'm just saying it must earn a few quid.

Right Here, Right Now: Exposures From The Public Realm.

Exhibition opportunity here folks. If you have a project on the go that kinda fits the above title, this might be worth a punt (and the now almost obligatory submission charge). It's a call to be included in next years FORMAT FESTIVAL in Derby. HERE for details.

Got a long term Documentary/fine art project that you think the world should see? Is it in the bag or just well under way? Well THIS is a great chance (for a few $$$$ of course) to get your work seen by a much wider audience, DAYLIGHT MAGAZINE is a heavyweight publication and the judges for this include Alec Soth and Darius Himes. Should you win you'll also get a Stateside solo show and published in the mag! Closing date 15th May, so get a wiggle on.

Thursday, 8 April 2010

1000 WORDS PHOTOGRAPHY have teamed up with Magnum photographer Antoine d’Agata and are putting on a workshop in Fez, Morocco. If you are interested and have £1250 you can submit HERE. Now OK £1250 is a lot of money but hey this is one of them once in a lifetime kind of experiences and it's in Morocco so you don't have to worry about disaster/war exploitative tourism issues. On top of that you get Tim from 1000 WORDS and one of the more interesting Magnum photographers as guides and teachers.

Making CONTACT.

Video by Foto8

No two ways about it when it comes to opportunities to show photography and resources/places to see photography, the UK lags behind the US and much of Europe. Your HEY HOT SHOTS and CRITICAL MASSES are in the UK as rare as a creative bone in a Manchester Councillor's body.

And so it is with great pleasure I can announce the birth of something British and photographic.

CONTACT EDITIONS is brought to you by Anna Stevens & Emily Graham and is a chance for selected photographers to show and sell prints, video interviews with said photographers and others plus competitions, slide shows, exhibitions and fresh bread. (I made the last one up to see if you were paying attention, you were well done.)

They are also running a blog, CONTACT PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG which has loads of good stuff on.

Although based in London they are already featuring three Manchester based photographers SEBA KURTIS and LOCK & HENNER so none of that London centric nonsense. Give a big cheer and your ongoing support.................

Colin, you pipped me to the bloody post!

Winter Warmer.

New Moston in December.

FROM FLAK

Hi All,

Hope you're well - I'm writing with an online photo request and hope you have a few moments to share your insight -

I'm looking for a contemporary art photograph that says WINTER - I'm planning to feature the photographer in my holiday email, which drops next month. All of us are spending time with quality photographs on a daily basis, so I'm hoping you have some compelling suggestions I should consider?

I put out a call on Flak Photo's Facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/flakphoto and a handful of solid submissions have already come in. This is very informal - I'm hoping that some of you can point my eyes at some interesting work to fit this project.

Feel free to share the call with fellow blogger/photographers you think would be interested in contributing ideas - artists can submit their images at min. 1000 px wide to my attention at
photo@flakmag.com

Thanks in advance for your time - talk soon!

Best,
AA

"It's not a proper book", "It looks better than I thought" is it one of those Blurb books? scoff scoff. "Anyone can make one of those" True. Just like anyone can take a photograph, doesn't mean it's going to be any good though does it?. It's a bit like when people used to look down at The Open University. We cry democracy but only for ourselves and as long as status quo is maintained at all times. Am I over egging the pudding? I don't think so. Surely it's got to be a good thing that anyone can get their ideas and project turned into print? The law of averages says there's going to be some gems coming through. The Irony is I've heard bloggers knocking self publishing!
And so at last self publishing is getting a bit of Kudos. Hip hip horaay then for Impressions Gallery Bradford. Impressions Gallery you are the new William Tyndale. Trouble is Thames & Hudson, Chris Boot and Dewi Lewis will want to burn you at the stake..........
P.S The print quality in my Blurb book is easily as good as in several T&H books I have at home, and I spent most of the first decade of my working life as a printer........
